Even with hardly any ruminants of cigarette use in the media, 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes. Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of diseases and premature death in the US. It’s dangerous and addictive, but people are still so into it.
The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smoke Out on the third Thursday of November each year. They encourage smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day, according to Cancer.org.
There are various stop smoking techniques — some work, some don’t. A lesser known technique — hypnosis — might be the answer for some.
Hypnosis is a new-age technique that helps a person achieve an unconscious psychological state, resembling sleep, heightening focus and concentration. Hypnosis has recently been used for patients that want to quit smoking, sometimes making them even forget they ever smoked, according to hypnotist Sandra Riley-Miller.
“It’s the most relaxing way to stop smoking that you are going to find,” Riley-Miller said.
Riley-Miller owns Choices-Hypnosis in Owensboro. She focuses on each patient’s specific problem with smoking. Patients kick back in a chair in her office and Riley-Miller lulls them into a sleeping-state by reading a hypnotic script. Patients should ideally be able to walk out of one session smoke-free, says Riley-Miller. The hypnosis treatment has an 80 percent success rate, she said.
Whether a person undergoes the treatment or goes cold turkey, smokers “have to be ready to stop”, says Riley-Miller. If smokers aren’t ready to stop, she explained, no treatment will work.
Hypnosis is one of the many ways smokers can kick the addictive habit this Fall to become healthier and happier, she said.
“You don’t have to smoke to live,” Riley-Miller said.
